(This list is in no particular order.)
#1. Picking the wrong kind of gear for your class.
As you go through the start of your journey you will start acquiring some gear, whether it be from quest rewards, purchasing it from vendors, or, if you want to be more independent, crafting it your self. Whatever the case may be you have to make sure the gear that you pick up corresponds with what class you are currently playing as. I know that you can switch to any class whenever you may choose once you hit level 10 but I do recommend focusing on gear for the class you will mainly be using at the start of your journey.
As for the gear itself, each piece of gear is made for a certain kind of class. I recommend taking a look at each piece of gear and looking at if it is labeled to be used by a "Disciple of War" which are classes that use physical abilities, or if it is labeled to be used by a "Disciple of Magic" which is, yep you guessed it classes that use magic abilities. Most gear is labeled by which class should actually equip it.
Another way you can see which gear is right for your class is by looking at what stats the gear boosts, you can do this by looking at your classes main stats and comparing it with a piece of gear to see which piece of gear you should go for. Not having the right pieces of gear can severely under power you in the future when going out doing quest and especially going in dungeons so please make sure you are properly equipped for the job.
#2.Not Knowing/Reading your skills
With positional skills you need to be either behind or to the side of an enemy when executing the skill in order to get the utmost damage out of the skill. While positional skills are mainly exclusive to the melee DPS classes, I consider it a great example on why reading up on your skills is important. Not reading up on your skills can put at a big disadvantage in the long run especially when you get to higher level content.
#3. Not doing your side quest
As you go and explorer on your journey you will run into people that have little quest icons above their heads that have a bit of a different look compared to your main quest markers, these are your side quest. Side quest are optional and you have a choice of whether you can do them or not, but as a starting adventurer I highly recommend you do them. Side quest not only give you a good amount of experiences points (Exp) that can help you level up faster but some side quest can provide you with free gear and items once you complete them.Allowing you to gear up faster, and letting you save some gil (money) for the future. With side Quest you have a lot of freedom on which ones you want to do, and it allows you to see little stories about the inhabitants of Eorzea. There are even special side quest you can find that will unlock new and fun activities for you to take part in.
These are just a few mistakes some new players can make when they start there journey as a brand new adventurer in Eorzea, but I hope this list has brought you some insight for you. So, when you do set off on your journey you can have a better idea on what to do and not do. If you have any mistakes you have made or seen others do when they first started, please say them in the comments below and discuss with one another on some of your rookie mistakes.
